Recording Technology

Recording Technology provides training in music production and audio post-production for the entertainment industry. Studies include sound for film, record production, live sound, acoustics and the business of music.

The curriculum emphasis is audio engineering with focus on music production in recording studios and audio post-production for film, television, radio and video games. Students may earn a certificate of achievement in Audio Recording Technology and an A.S. in Recording Technology.

This discipline prepares students to do the following:

  • Communicate effectively using proper vocabulary in written and verbal form to facilitate the technical and creative outcomes of a product.
  • Demonstrate understanding of wave theory, room acoustics, materials, and microphone and speaker placement.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental principles of audio through developing critical thinking, decision-making and problem solving skills by applying them to the studio, post-production and live sound environments.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills, empathy, and respect for others by completing team projects in order to gain key skills expected of professionals in the field.
  • Demonstrate advanced computer competency by completing production assignments utilizing software-based production and editing systems.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the technical, creative and interpersonal skills required by the entertainment industry through demonstrating thorough knowledge of digital audio workstations and all audio hardware as appropriate to each course by performing these advanced skills in projects standard to the industry.

Survey of Entertainment Technology

This course is an introduction to conventional and online entertainment technology. Includes exploring the content and creation of recorded music, television, radio, live theatre, film, video and electronic gaming: lecture, demonstration, field trips and guest professionals; media creation.

Record Production Basics

This is a course in the study and implementation of production techniques for the music industry. Students will typically work with a pop-oriented rock band, during which time they will record and mix 4 to 5 songs. The students will experience the entire process of recording a band and producing a short album.

This course is an introduction to the current technology, terminology and techniques used in audio engineering for recorded music, video and online media. Includes the history of audio, basic audio electronics, microphones, consoles, computer-based production systems and related signal processors.

This applied workshop course provides an introduction to basic audio hardware, software and recording techniques. Units include digital audio workstation set-up and operation, basic microphone techniques, software and hardware-based recording and mixing.

This course is the study and implementation of MIDI technology in the audio recording industry. The course covers standard software sequencers, controllers, modules, soft-synths and applications of the technology in the industry.

A course in aural skills development for recording engineers. This class will focus on music, acoustic and electronic timbres, general instrument ranges and sonic properties, blend, balance, equalization, panning, reverb, compression, limiting and other tools used in the recording process.

This is a survey focusing on the practices and procedures of record companies, publishing companies, performing rights societies, and unions. The course will also study the processes of record and film production, as well as, career opportunities in these fields.
